Sanford Orlando Kennel Club is very interested in the welfare of the greyhounds that participate at our facility, not only while they are racing here but after their racing days are over.

Retired greyhounds need love and attention from individuals and or families that can care for them and give them a great home. Greyhounds are friendly, affectionate and gentle and because of those attributes, make great pets for families with children. They make excellent walking and jogging companions and easily settle into a life of retirement.

Sanford Orlando Kennel Club is in the unique position of working with four adoption agencies right here in our marketplace. Each agency works hard at placing greyhounds in great pet homes and has a true love of the dog as their first and foremost concern.

In an effort to support the causes of these adoption agencies, Sanford Orlando Kennel Club will hold two “charity days” during the course of the year, in which any pari-mutuel money that normally would go to the state of Florida as taxes, is earmarked specifically for the greyhound adoption agencies. In addition, the agencies receive other monies from the track from uncashed mutuel tickets. Over the past 5 years these tickets have averaged $9,000 a year. On any given weekend you will see several retired greyhounds from the adoption groups walking around the facility. This exposure gives potential adoptees the opportunity to see the dogs, view their temperament and ask the volunteers any questions before making the commitment to adopting one of these great athletes.

According to the American Greyhound Council, since the early 1990’s more than 180,000 retired greyhounds have been adopted by caring families.  Nationwide, greyhound racetracks spend in excess of $2 million annually on local and or track based adoption efforts.
